Following a car accident, the defendant, Christopher Coffin, was charged with failing to reduce the speed of his vehicle to avoid an accident (625 ILCS 5/11-601(a) (West 1996)), and driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) (625 ILCS 5/11-501(a)(2) (West Supp. 1997))1.
