In August 1992, Albert C. Wilkerson and his wife Belinda Wilkerson bought a window-unit air conditioner for their home. They bought it from a store operated by Sears, Roebuck and Company. The air conditioner, which had been manufactured by White Consolidated Industries, Inc. ("WCI"), did not work.
