Cynthia M. Collins was discharged by the United States Postal Service during her probationary period after failing an examination required for her assigned position. She applied for reinstatement which was denied, and she then sued for race and sex discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, 42 U.S.C. § 2000(e) et seq. The case was tried to the district court1
