STATEMENT OF THE CASE

On 30 April 1997, appellant Shawn Dennis was charged by bill of information with the unlawful possession of crack cocaine, a controlled dangerous substance, within one thousand feet of a school, a violation of La. R.S. 40:981.3. On 16 July 1997, a jury found the appellant guilty as charged. On 3 October 1997, he was sentenced to serve three years at hard labor without benefit of parole, probation or suspension of sentence...
