Plaintiff John Reed ("Reed") works as a longshoreman at the harbor in Duluth, Minnesota. On November 8, 1995, Reed was injured as he was walking down the gangway of the M/V Gordon C. Leitch, a Great Lakes carrier that was moored in the Duluth harbor.
