On October 3, 1997, the defendant, on probation in connection with a prior assault conviction, attacked Chris Kelleher, an emergency medical technician, in a park in the Bronx. Ortiz stabbed Kelleher several times in the chest, inflicting two puncture holes in his shirt and a 1-to-1½-inch slash of his bulletproof vest. It was the vest which saved his life.
