LYNCH, J.

The defendant appeals from his conviction of murder in the first degree on the basis of extreme atrocity or cruelty. He claims that there was an inadequate basis for finding his inculpatory statements to police voluntary because they were not electronically recorded. He also requests that we adopt a new rule requiring the right to the assistance of an independent interpreter during custodial interrogations for those suspects unable to communicate in English...
