In 1986 an illiterate and mildly retarded 16-year-old named Gerald Rice, encouraged by two friends, tossed a bottle of gasoline into an apartment building in Chicago. The bottle exploded, setting a fire that killed four residents of the building. Rice, who was arrested immediately and confessed a little later, was convicted in state court of first-degree murder and sentenced to natural life in prison.
