The plaintiff was the sometime-live-in girlfriend of the defendant Richard Merlis between the years 1978 and 1987. In 1988 Merlis bought a six-room townhouse condominium. The plaintiff moved into it, while Merlis continued to live in his family home with his two sons, the defendants James F. Merlis and Jonathan Lee Merlis.
