Edna Howard, a member of the Chicago local of the postal workers' union, sued the union and its president claiming that they had denied her an equal right to vote at a meeting of the union, in violation of her voting and free speech rights under sections 101(a)(1) and (2) of the Landrum-Griffin Act, 29 U.S.C. § 411(a)(1), (2), and also in violation of the union's constitution. 29 U.S.C. § 185.
