Derrick Delmar Brocks was convicted of first-degree murder for the killing of James Nunn in violation of Minn.Stat. 609.185(1) (1996). At the close of the state's case, Brocks requested and received a jury instruction on self-defense. The trial court also instructed on the lesser-included offense of second-degree murder (intentional but not premeditated).
