On 5 June 1996, Carla Lynn Hardy returned from work and parked her red 1993 Mazda Protégé in front of her apartment in Greensboro. The car was worth approximately $9,000.00. The next morning, it was gone. Hardy reported the car as stolen. She recalled that several days earlier, when her brother was working on the car, she had left a spare ignition key in the glove compartment.
