The defendant, who had no prior criminal record, was indicted for two counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument in the second degree and criminal simulation. The instrument in question was a simulated or forged "rate card" for a taxi. He pleaded not guilty and was released on his own recognizance. The Judge to whom the case was assigned for trial informed the defendant that, if he pleaded guilty, he would be sentenced...
