I. INTRODUCTION

Ruth Ward was admitted to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital for the birth of her fourth child. She was treated under the care of her personal obstetrician and his associates, none of whom was a hospital employee. At their direction, Ward received blood transfusions at the hospital.
