Plaintiff Ernestine Ali worked for the Department of Veteran Affairs ("VA") as a medical clerk typist at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Hines, Illinois from August 9, 1992 until October 31, 1994, when she was fired. In the termination letter, the VA pointed to Ali's year-long, unauthorized absence from work, her failure to request leave, and her unwillingness to obey supervisory instructions...
