Defendant, Dwayne LeBlanc, was charged by grand jury indictment on January 12, 1995, with one count of second degree murder, a violation of La. R.S. 14:30.1, and one count of attempted first degree murder of a police officer, a violation of La. R.S. 14:(27)30. At his arraignment on January 17, 1995, defendant pleaded not guilty.
