Joan Steffes suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a condition that restricts her breathing and, among other things, makes it dangerous for her to be exposed to certain chemicals. Despite her condition, Steffes worked in the warehouse of a chemical company, Stepan Company (Stepan), until she was bumped from that position by a senior union member.
