We hold that the family court of the fifth circuit (the family court) was correctly guided by Hawai`i Revised Statutes (HRS) § 703-309(1) (1993) pertaining to permissible use of force by a parent, in determining whether force used in disciplining children constituted "family violence" under HRS § 571-46(9) (1993), one of the provisions which relates to child custody.
