The problem giving rise to this appeal is a small one, but a chronic and nagging one. What it involves is, to be sure, merely a peripheral aspect of a conviction for a larger offense, but it is nonetheless a problem that recurs with annoying frequency. It is generally the result of a stubborn obstinacy on the part of the State in attempting to make a single assault conviction, in the context of a general verdict...
