The defendant, Darrell D. Varigaud1, was charged with attempted second degree murder in violation of LSA-R.S. 14:27 and 14:30.1. On February 15, 1990, the trial court conducted a sanity hearing finding that the defendant lacked the mental capacity to proceed to trial and ordered that the defendant be "civilly committed" to the custody of the Department of Health and Human Resources.
