Before August 1994, agents of the Drug Enforcement Agency ("DEA") were conducting a long-term investigation of Defendant-Appellant James Carothers ("Defendant") and several other people about a conspiracy to distribute cocaine and MDMA (a/k/a "Ecstasy"). At this time, the DEA was using an informant to make several controlled buys of cocaine and MDMA from these conspirators, including Stephen Farrar.
