Chapter 13 of the Bankruptcy Code permits a debtor with a regular income to reschedule payments. Creditors receive a portion of the debtor's income for a fixed time, at the end of which the debtor receives a discharge. Consolidation can assist both debtors and creditors. The attraction to debtors of a single monthly payment and eventual discharge is obvious. A Chapter 13 plan is an improvement from creditors' perspective only if the easier...
