This case had its genesis in the death of Ronald Puttorak, who was found hanging from a bed sheet in his jail cell in August 1993. Following an autopsy his death was ruled a suicide. Concerned about possible foul play and possible negligence on the part of jail guards, Puttorak's relatives retained an attorney who hired defendant Speth, a pathologist, to review the autopsy findings.
