These appeals involve two cases that were consolidated at the trial level. May O. Thompson ("Thompson"), now deceased, was the mother of Hattie Thompson Lide ("Lide") and the grandmother of Kay L. Reid ("Reid"). Lide is the mother of Reid.

Thompson, on January 20, 1993, filed an action ("original action") against Reid and SouthTrust Bank, N.A., to recover three certificates of deposit. On March 19, 1993...
