The defendant, Alberto Gomez, Jr., was charged with two counts of first degree murder (720 ILCS 5/9-1(a)(2) (West 1994)) and conspiracy to commit first degree murder (720 ILCS 5/8-2(a), 9-1(a)(2) (West 1994)). A jury found the defendant guilty of conspiracy, but was unable to reach a verdict on the first degree murder charges. The trial court declared a mistrial as to those charges.
