The defendant, Bernon Howery, was charged by indictment with four counts of first-degree murder (Ill.Rev.Stat.1989, ch. 38, par. 9-1(a)(2)), four counts of felony murder (Ill.Rev.Stat.1989, ch. 38, par. 9-1(a)(3)) and one count of aggravated arson (Ill.Rev.Stat. 1989, ch. 38, par. 20-1.1).
