Following a jury trial, defendant Ralph H. Syverson was found guilty of home invasion (720 ILCS 5/12-11(a)(1) (West 1994)) and guilty but mentally ill of second degree murder (720 ILCS 5/9-2(a)(1) (West 1994)). Following a sentencing hearing, the trial court concluded that consecutive sentences were mandatory.
