Justice CHAPMAN delivered the opinion of the court:

The defendant, William Hufstedler, pleaded guilty to armed robbery (720 ILCS 5/18-2(a) (West 1994)), aggravated kidnapping (720 ILCS 5/10-2(a)(5) (West 1994)), and aggravated vehicular hijacking (720 ILCS 5/18-4(a)(3) (West 1994)) and was sentenced to concurrent terms of 12 years' imprisonment. In consideration for defendant pleading guilty, the State had agreed not to seek sentences in excess of 18 years' imprisonment...
