This case arises out of the murder of Marvin "Coy" Hartley, who was found beaten to death in his home on 8 December 1994. Defendant was indicted for this crime on 20 February 1995 and was tried non-capitally before a jury. The jury returned a verdict finding defendant guilty of first-degree murder. The trial court imposed a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment for this conviction.
