Justice GARMAN delivered the opinion of the court:

Defendant Andrew P. Bowen was charged in the circuit court of Adams County with one count of aggravated criminal sexual assault (720 ILCS 5/12-14(b)(1) (West 1994)). He was accused of placing his penis in the mouth of then three-year-old D.M.P. while he was baby-sitting her sometime during the month of May 1992. Following a bench trial, defendant was convicted and subsequently sentenced to nine years' imprisonment...
