The defendant, Robert C. Beauchamp, was indicted for the murder in the first degree in 1971. The jury returned a verdict of guilty of murder in the second degree, and the defendant was sentenced to life in prison. No appeal was taken from the conviction or from the denial of the motion for a new trial. In 1974, the defendant failed to return from a furlough.
