I. INTRODUCTION

Appellant, Hugh C. Jackson, pled guilty in the district court for Douglas County to the crime of shoplifting in an amount less than $200. See Neb.Rev.Stat. §§ 28-511.01 (Reissue 1989) and 28-518 (Cum.Supp.1994). At a subsequent enhancement hearing, the district court determined that Jackson was guilty of third-offense shoplifting, a felony. See § 28-518.
