In late spring 1991, plaintiff John B. McNamara became interested in leasing space at Long Leaf Mall (the Mall) to house a retail custom jewelry store. The Mall was at all relevant times owned by defendant Wilmington Mall Realty Corp. and managed by Great Atlantic Real Estate-Property Management (Great Atlantic).
