Following a jury trial, defendant Kerry Pope was convicted of three counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault. Ill. Rev.Stat.1991, ch. 38, par. 12-14(b)(1), now 720 ILCS 5/12-14(b)(1) (West 1994). During the preparation of the presentence investigation report, defendant submitted a written statement to the probation office.
