Elahi, his wife Kokab Moarefi Elahi, and their daughter Maryam Elahi, former clients of the investment firm PaineWebber Incorporated ("PaineWebber"), sought arbitration of several claims stemming from ill-fated investments. PaineWebber filed a complaint in federal district court seeking to stay arbitration, alleging that the claims were time-barred under the terms of the arbitration agreement.
