This case principally involves questions about what is required to prove mens rea for violations of certain federal criminal statutes that regulate the possession of firearms, specifically machine guns and silencers. The government alleged that Gilbert Syverson violated these statutes by knowingly possessing several questionable items: a metal cylinder that could slightly diminish the report of a pistol, a variety of unassembled gun parts...
