Charles W. Howell was murdered in 1990. At the time of his death, Charles was the insured under a life insurance policy and a retirement annuity issued by State Farm Life Insurance Company (State Farm). Charles designated his wife, Faye A. Howell, as the primary beneficiary and his son, Maximillian D. Howell, as the contingent beneficiary of both policies.
