The victim in this case, Joseph Beeson, was an inmate at Ely State Prison (ESP). On August 20, 1990, he was found dead in his cell with a ligature around his neck and multiple stab wounds in his upper body. ESP inmates Kevin Reynolds, Todd Evans, and appellant David E.
