James P. Bettinger was involved in a traffic accident in which another driver, Robert Young, was negligent. Young had an agreement with Idaho Auto Auction, Inc. (IAA) to transport vehicles for salvage. A trial ensued to determine the amount of damages and whether IAA was responsible for Young's negligence under the doctrine of respondeat superior.
