In May 1984, respondent/cross-appellant Ralph Miller was employed as an operator in the production department of Pacific Engineering Company of Nevada in Henderson, Nevada, when his low back was injured in a job accident. Later in 1984, he underwent L3-4 and L4-5 discectomy surgery and laminectomy surgery.
