On August 4, 1992, Plaintiff-Appellee Bank of Hawai`i (BOH), a Hawai`i corporation, filed a complaint in the district court against Defendant-Appellant Stephen M. Shaw (Shaw) after failed attempts to collect over $5,000 in delinquent credit card bills from Shaw. Shaw, an attorney, represented himself in the proceedings.
