In 1975, several black employees and the Southwest Workers Federation (collectively the Federation) brought this employment discrimination lawsuit against the Missouri Pacific Railroad Company (Missouri Pacific). See 42 U.S.C. §§ 1981, 2000e-5(f) (1994). About seven years after the filing of the Federation's complaint, the district court granted the Federation's motion for class certification. See Webb v.
