A former prisoner in the State of Minnesota's supervised release program raped and murdered appellants' decedent, Melissa Johnson. Appellants sued respondents for wrongful death, but the trial court granted dismissal motions, concluding that no relief could be granted on appellants' claims because the respondent state and county and their agents, officers and employees were immune from suit.
