The present criminal proceeding was commenced on April 29, 1991. On June 7, 1991, the defendant was arraigned on the indictment and the People filed a statement of readiness. In May 1993, the defendant moved to dismiss the indictment on the ground that he had been deprived of his right to a speedy trial.
