Michael Reese pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute cocaine, and was sentenced to a prison term, to be followed by five years of supervised release. Under the law that existed at the time Reese was sentenced, the district judge had discretion as to the amount of additional prison time to impose if Reese were to be found in possession of a controlled substance during the period of his supervised release, up to the total period of supervised...
