The dispositive issue before the court is whether the trial court abused its discretion in concluding that the defendant's proposed defenses and counterclaim were unrelated to the plaintiff's complaint and could be raised in a separate cause of action and, consequently, in sustaining the plaintiff's objection to the defendant's request for leave to amend his response to include those defenses and the counterclaim. We conclude that it did abuse its discretion...
