The defendant, Michael Woods, was convicted after a jury trial of the crime of escape in the first degree in violation of General Statutes (Rev. to 1991) § 53a-169 (a) (2).1 The defendant appealed from the judgment of the trial court to the Appellate Court, and we transferred the appeal to this court pursuant to Practice Book § 4023 and General Statutes § 51-199 (c).
