The defendants appeal from the judgments of conviction, rendered after a jury trial, of assault in the first degree in violation of General Statutes § 53a-59 (a) (4),1 assault of an employee of the department of correction in violation of General Statutes § 53a-167c (a) (1),2 attempted escape in the first degree in violation of General Statutes § 53a-493
