On February 24, 1989, an altercation at the McDonald's restaurant in Gonzales between three minors, Jim T. Templet, Eric W. Johnson (Johnson), and Neil C. Brown, resulted in serious injuries to Templet. Templet's mother, Patricia Templet Carpenter, filed suit on Templet's behalf against Johnson; Johnson's father, Gordon S. Johnson (G.
