Appellee Penny Williams opened an account with Shearson Lehman Brothers, Inc. in September of 1989. Her financial consultant with Shearson, Jerry Wood, reportedly wrote checks to himself on Williams' account and those of some twenty-three other clients in an aggregate sum of 1.2 to 1.4 million dollars.
